Granulated steel

nounStandard termMetallurgy

Steel produced by quenching molten pig iron in water to form small granules.

A historic intermediate product made by pouring molten pig iron directly into a water bath, shattering the metal into small, brittle pellets. These high-carbon granules were then mixed with iron oxide and melted in a crucible to produce a more uniform, controlled carbon steel.

Heard on the job

We need to crush the granulated steel finer before mixing the crucible charge.
