Upsetter

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A horizontal forging press used to thicken the ends of metal bars.

A specialized mechanical forging machine that grips a heated bar and strikes it axially with a heading tool. This process, called upsetting, gathers the metal to increase the cross-section at the end of the stock. It is heavily used in mass production to forge bolt heads, engine valves, flanges, and axle shafts without folding or buckling the grain structure.
