Weldless

adjectiveStandard termMetallurgy

A component manufactured from a single piece of metal without joining processes.

Describes a metal part formed entirely from a single billet or ingot through forging, rolling, or casting, rather than joining separate pieces together. Weldless construction eliminates the heat-affected zones and potential stress risers associated with welded joints. It is specified for high-pressure vessels, heavy lifting rings, and critical aerospace components where a joint failure would be catastrophic.

Heard on the job

We need to spec a weldless forged ring for the pressure vessel collar to meet the new safety requirements.

Insider tip

In high-stress applications, inspectors will reject parts that show any sign of joining when a weldless component is specified on the drawing.
