nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A manual potter's wheel powered by kicking a heavy lower flywheel.

A traditional potter's wheel that operates entirely on human power. The potter sits at the wheel head and repeatedly kicks or pushes a heavy lower disc, known as a flywheel, with their foot to generate and maintain rotational momentum for throwing clay.

Insider tip

Using a kick wheel requires significant leg strength and coordination, but many potters prefer it for the precise control it offers over the rotation speed without relying on electricity.
