Punt

nounShop talkCeramics & Glass

A solid iron rod attached to the base of a glass vessel to hold it during finishing.

A punt is a solid metal rod used by glassblowers to transfer a piece of hot glass off the blowpipe so the top opening can be shaped. The glassmaker gathers a small amount of glass on the tip of the punt, attaches it to the bottom of the vessel, and then cracks the piece off the blowpipe. It acts as a handle for the final stages of heating, tooling, and spinning the glass.
