Moil

nounShop talkCeramics & Glass

The scrap glass left attached to the end of a blowpipe or punty after a piece is knocked off.

This cylindrical ring of waste glass remains on the metal pipe once the main vessel is transferred or finished. Glassblowers must crack the moil off the pipe and drop it into a scrap bucket before they can take a fresh gather. It is typically recycled as cullet in a subsequent furnace melt.

Heard on the job

Knock that moil off into the cullet bin before the pipe cools down too much.
