Marver

nounStandard termCeramics & Glass

A flat, heat-resistant surface used to roll and shape molten glass.

A thick, flat table or slab, typically made of polished steel, cast iron, or historically marble, used in glassblowing. The glassblower rolls a gather of hot glass across the surface to shape it, cool the exterior slightly, or consolidate applied colored frit and cane before further blowing.

Heard on the job

Roll the gather on the marver to give it a slight taper before you start blowing out the bubble.

Insider tip

Keep the marver perfectly clean and free of cold glass shards; any debris left on the surface will instantly stick to and ruin your next hot gather.
