Brake light

nounStandard termAutomotive

A red warning indicator on the dashboard signaling a malfunction in the braking system.

A dashboard warning indicator that illuminates when the vehicle's computer detects a critical issue in the braking system. It typically triggers for low brake fluid, a loss of hydraulic pressure in half the master cylinder, or an engaged parking brake. Ignoring this light can result in complete brake failure.

Heard on the job

Do not mix it up with

  • ABS: The ABS light indicates a fault in the anti-lock system, while the red brake light warns of a fundamental hydraulic failure or engaged parking brake.
