Computer-controlled timing

nounStandard termAutomotive

An ignition system where an electronic control unit determines exactly when to fire the spark plugs.

Computer-controlled timing replaces mechanical distributors and centrifugal advances with engine sensors and a digital processor. The engine control unit reads data from the crank position, throttle, and knock sensors to continuously adjust the ignition spark timing. This precise control optimizes engine power, fuel economy, and emissions under varying load conditions.
