Distributorless

adjectiveStandard termAutomotive

Describes an ignition system that routes voltage directly to spark plugs without a mechanical rotor.

An ignition setup that eliminates the traditional mechanical distributor, relying instead on multiple ignition coils controlled directly by the engine computer. These systems fire the spark plugs using either a coil-pack setup with waste-spark timing or individual coil-on-plug modules. Removing the distributor eliminates mechanical wear points, prevents moisture-related misfires, and allows for much more precise ignition timing control.

Heard on the job

It's a distributorless setup, so check the coil packs first if you're getting a random misfire code.
