DRL stands for daytime running lights, a safety feature designed to increase the conspicuity of a vehicle during daylight hours. They operate at a lower intensity than low-beam headlights and turn on automatically when the vehicle is in gear or the engine is running. They do not illuminate the dashboard or tail lights.

Insider tip
A common rookie mistake is driving at night with only DRLs on, leaving the rear of the car completely dark.
