ECU

abbreviationStandard termAutomotive

The primary computer that manages engine performance, fuel delivery and emissions.

The engine control unit reads data from dozens of sensors to calculate fuel delivery, ignition timing, and idle speed in real time. It acts as the brain of the powertrain, adjusting parameters to maintain efficiency and power under varying loads and temperatures. When it detects a fault outside its programmed parameters, it triggers a diagnostic trouble code and illuminates the check engine light.

Heard on the job

I flashed the ECU with a custom tune to handle the larger injectors and higher boost pressure.

Insider tip

Always disconnect the negative battery cable before unplugging an ECU to prevent voltage spikes from frying the internal circuitry.

Do not mix it up with

  • ECM: ECU and ECM are used interchangeably for the engine computer, though ECU can sometimes refer broadly to any electronic control unit in the vehicle.
