A switching device, traditionally a thermal relay but now typically a solid-state electronic module, that rapidly interrupts the circuit to the turn signal bulbs. This creates the rhythmic blinking required for indicators and hazard lights. When a traditional unit fails, the lights will usually stay on solid or not illuminate at all.
