Instrumentation

nounStandard termAutomotive

The collection of gauges, dials, and warning lights that display a vehicle's operating status to the driver.

Instrumentation refers to the complete cluster of gauges, digital screens, and warning lights mounted in the dashboard. These displays relay critical real-time data from the engine control unit and various sensors, including vehicle speed, engine speed, coolant temperature, and fuel level. Technicians rely on these readouts during test drives to verify that sensor outputs match the physical dashboard readings.

Heard on the job

I replaced the coolant temperature sensor, but the instrumentation is still pegging the needle in the red, so we might have a wiring issue to the cluster.

Insider tip

When diagnosing a faulty gauge, always check whether the issue lies in the physical instrumentation cluster itself or the underlying sensor feeding it data.
