Jump box

nounShop talkAutomotive

A portable battery pack used to start a vehicle with a dead battery.

A jump box is a self-contained, rechargeable battery unit equipped with heavy-duty jumper cables. Technicians use it to deliver high-amperage cranking power directly to a vehicle battery terminals without needing a second running vehicle. Newer versions use lithium-ion cells, making them small enough to fit in a glove box while still pushing enough cold cranking amps to turn over a V8.

Heard on the job

Grab the jump box from the tool cart, the alternator on this tow-in is completely fried and the battery is flat.
