Plying

nounStandard termTextiles

The process of twisting two or more single strands of yarn together to create a stronger, balanced thread.

The spinning technique where multiple single spun yarns are twisted around one another. This is typically done in the opposite direction of the original spinning twist to neutralize the yarn's stored energy. It produces a thicker, stronger, and more uniform yarn that resists unravelling and knits or weaves without biasing.

Heard on the job

I finished spinning the singles last night and I'll start plying them on the wheel this morning.

Insider tip

A yarn plied with a Z-twist usually consists of singles spun with an S-twist, ensuring the final cord hangs straight without kinking.
