Printcloth

nounStandard termTextiles

A lightweight plain-woven cotton fabric specifically manufactured to receive printed designs.

This plain-woven cotton or cotton-blend fabric is constructed with a high thread count to create a smooth, uniform surface ideal for continuous roller or screen printing. Mills produce it in the greige state before sending it to converters who bleach and print it. The tight weave prevents dyes from bleeding, ensuring crisp patterns for garments and quilting.

Heard on the job

We need a finer printcloth for this floral run, because the current batch is bleeding at the edges of the motif.

Insider tip

While often confused with broadcloth, printcloth usually has a slightly lower thread count and is engineered specifically to hold crisp printed motifs rather than solid dyes.
