Plain-woven

adjectiveStandard termTextiles

Constructed using the simplest over-one, under-one interlacing of warp and weft threads.

Describes a textile produced by passing each weft yarn alternately over and under each warp yarn in a strict one-to-one grid. This fundamental weave creates a stable, flat fabric with identical front and back faces. It maximizes the number of yarn intersections, resulting in a strong cloth that resists snagging but has minimal drape.

Heard on the job

The lining should be a plain-woven cotton so it doesn't stretch out of shape when the coat hangs.

Do not mix it up with

  • Twill: Plain-woven fabrics alternate over and under every single thread, while twill staggers the intersections to create diagonal lines.
