Piecening is the manual act of rejoining a broken draft of fibers or a snapped yarn while a spinning frame or mule is running. The spinner overlaps the broken ends and allows the twist of the machine to catch and bind them together. A good piecening is nearly invisible, while a sloppy one creates a thick, weak spot in the finished yarn.
Heard on the job
The roving keeps breaking on spindle four, so I have had to piecen it five times this shift.
Insider tip
Fast and accurate piecening is the core physical skill of a machine spinner, requiring a light touch to avoid adding too much mass to the join.
