Limerick lace

nounStandard termTextiles

A form of embroidered lace created by stitching patterns onto a machine-made net background.

This textile is produced by stretching a fine, machine-woven hexagonal net over a frame and applying decorative stitches directly onto the mesh. Artisans use either a tambour hook to create chain stitches or a needle for darning and filling stitches. It provides the delicate appearance of true handmade lace but requires significantly less time to produce since the ground network is already formed.

The veil is an authentic piece of Limerick lace, so handle the net ground carefully to avoid tearing the tambour work.
