The Martindale unit represents the number of abrasive cycles a fabric can withstand before showing noticeable wear or yarn breakage. It is the standard metric for specifying upholstery durability in commercial and residential settings. A rating of 20,000 is suitable for general domestic use, while heavy-duty commercial fabrics require 40,000 or more.
