Martindale method

nounStandard termTextiles

A standardized laboratory test used to determine the abrasion and pilling resistance of textiles.

The Martindale method tests fabric durability by rubbing a sample against a standard abrasive surface, such as worsted wool or wire mesh, under a specified weight. The machine moves in a complex Lissajous figure to simulate natural, multidirectional wear. Technicians record the number of cycles completed before two yarns break or unacceptable pilling occurs.
