Jufti knot

nounStandard termTextiles

A rug-making knot tied over four warp threads instead of two.

A false knot used in hand-woven Oriental rugs where the yarn is tied around four warp threads rather than the standard two. Weavers use it to save time and material, effectively halving the knot count and labor for that section. It results in a looser, less durable pile that wears out much faster than a standard knot.

Heard on the job

You can feel the jufti knots if you bend the pile back; the density drops right off in the center field.

Insider tip

Appraisers look for jufti knots as a sign of inferior quality or corner-cutting in rug production.
