Ladder stitch

nounStandard termTextiles

An invisible hand stitch used to close seams from the outside.

A hand-sewing technique used to close openings invisibly from the right side of the fabric. The needle takes alternating parallel bites into the folded edges of the two pieces being joined; when the thread is pulled tight, the stitches disappear into the seam crease.

Heard on the job

Stuff the pillow completely, then use a ladder stitch to close the turning hole.

Insider tip

Keep your stitches perfectly parallel and directly across from one another; angled stitches will pucker the fabric when pulled tight.
