The side of a fabric intended to face outward on a finished project.

The public-facing surface of a textile. In printed or textured fabrics, this side displays the intended pattern, color, or finish. During garment construction, seams are typically sewn with the right sides facing together so the seam allowances remain hidden on the inside.

Heard on the job

Pin the front and back bodice pieces right sides together and stitch the side seams.

Insider tip

If a solid-colored fabric looks identical on both sides, pick one side to be the right side and mark it with chalk to keep the grain and sheen consistent.

Do not mix it up with

  • Wrong side: The right side faces out, while the wrong side is hidden inside the garment.
