Self-fabric

nounStandard termTextiles

The primary material from which the main body of a garment is constructed.

Designers specify this term when a detail, such as a belt, covered button, or facing, is made from the exact same textile as the rest of the piece. Using the main material ensures perfect color matching and consistent wear over time. It contrasts with contrast fabrics, linings, or commercial trims that might otherwise be used for those components.

Heard on the job

Cut the bias strips for the neckline binding from the self-fabric rather than using the commercial cotton tape.

Insider tip

Cutting self-fabric trim on the true bias ensures it will curve smoothly around necklines without puckering.
