Bias tape

nounStandard termTextiles

A narrow strip of fabric cut on a 45-degree angle to the grainline.

A strip of fabric cut diagonally across the weave, giving it natural stretch and flexibility. It is folded and pressed to encase raw edges, finish armholes and necklines, or create piping. Because of its stretch, it easily conforms to tight curves without puckering.

Heard on the job

We need to bind the armscyes with half-inch bias tape so they lay flat against the body.

Insider tip

Always stretch the tape slightly as you pin it around an inner curve to prevent the finished edge from flipping outward.
