Ease

nounStandard termTextiles

The difference between the actual body measurement and the finished measurement of a garment.

Ease is the extra room built into a sewing pattern to allow the wearer to move, sit, and breathe. Fitting ease provides the bare minimum space required for physical comfort, while design ease adds extra volume to create a specific silhouette, like a baggy sweater or a flowing skirt.

Heard on the job

The pattern has four inches of positive ease at the bust, so it will fit loosely.

Insider tip

Negative ease means the garment is smaller than the body, which is required for stretch fabrics like spandex so they cling tightly.
