Godet

nounStandard termTextiles

A triangular piece of fabric inserted into a seam or slit to add volume and flare to a garment.

A triangular or wedge-shaped piece of fabric sewn into a vertical seam, hem, or slit of a garment. Godets are used to add physical volume, ease of movement, and a flared, wavy drape to the lower edge of skirts and dresses without adding bulk at the waist or hips.

Heard on the job

I'm inserting a sheer chiffon godet into each seam of the skirt to give it more sweep on the dance floor.

Insider tip

Rookies often struggle to sew the sharp point of a godet cleanly; reinforcing the point on the main fabric before clipping and pivoting is essential for a crisp finish.
