Bind off

verbStandard termTextiles

The process of securing live stitches in knitting to finish an edge.

The technique used to close the final row of live stitches on a knitting needle so the fabric does not unravel. There are many variations, such as the standard chain bind-off, sewn bind-offs, and stretchy bind-offs, each chosen based on the required elasticity of the garment edge.

Heard on the job

You'll want to bind off loosely on the neckline so the sweater can actually fit over the baby's head.

Insider tip

If your standard bind-off is always too tight, try using a needle one or two sizes larger in your right hand just for the final row.
