Wrong side

nounStandard termTextiles

The back or inside face of a piece of fabric that is meant to be hidden in the final garment.

The wrong side is the surface of the textile where seams, knots, and less vibrant prints are located. In garment construction, pattern pieces are typically sewn with these faces touching so that the seam allowances remain hidden on the inside of the finished item. Identifying this face correctly before cutting prevents mismatched panels.

Heard on the job

Pin the pieces right sides together so the seam allowance ends up on the wrong side.

Insider tip

On printed cottons, this face is noticeably paler; on knits, the purl bumps usually indicate the interior face.
