The set of lengthwise yarns held in tension on a loom before weaving begins.

The longitudinal threads attached to a loom that create the foundation of a woven fabric. Warp yarns must be strong and tightly spun to withstand the high tension and constant abrasion of the weaving process. They are intersected at right angles by the weft.

Check the tension on the warp before you start throwing the shuttle.

Remember the direction with the mnemonic "warp goes up and down, weft goes left and right."

  • Weft: Warp runs vertically along the length of the fabric, while weft runs horizontally across the width.
