Weft

nounStandard termTextiles

The transverse yarns inserted over and under the warp to create a woven fabric.

The horizontal threads that run from selvage to selvage across the width of a loom. Because they do not endure the high tension required of longitudinal threads, these yarns can be softer, bulkier, or less tightly spun. They are carried through the shed by a shuttle, rapier, or air jet.
