AprilTag

nounStandard termRobotics

A distinct square barcode system used by computer vision systems to determine position and orientation.

AprilTags are visual fiducial markers consisting of a black and white grid inside a black square border. A robot's camera detects the tag and algorithms calculate its exact 3D position, distance, and rotation relative to the lens. They are widely used for docking, localization, and calibrating multi-camera setups because they require very little computing power to process.

Heard on the job

Stick an AprilTag on the charging station so the rover knows exactly where to dock.

Insider tip

Print them on matte paper. Glossy finishes create glare that blinds the camera and breaks the localization loop.
