Visual servoing relies on real-time image processing to adjust the position and trajectory of a robot. Instead of moving blindly to pre-programmed coordinates, the controller continuously calculates the error between the current camera view and the target image, driving the motors to minimize that error. It can be implemented with a camera mounted on the robot arm or fixed in the workspace.
Heard on the job
The visual servoing loop is lagging, so the arm keeps overshooting the conveyor target when the belt speeds up.
Insider tip
The main challenge in visual servoing is latency. If the image processing takes too long, the control loop becomes unstable and the robot will oscillate.
