Buffer beam

The heavy transverse structural beam at the ends of a locomotive or railcar.

A thick steel plate or beam mounted horizontally across the extreme front and rear ends of a rail vehicle's frame. It provides the mounting point for the couplers, draft gear, brake pipe connections, and in some systems, side buffers. It absorbs the direct impact of coupling and collisions.

The crossing accident bent the pilot, but the main buffer beam took the hit and saved the frame.
