Cab unit

nounStandard termRailroad

A diesel locomotive enclosed in a streamlined, full-width carbody.

A style of early diesel locomotive where the structural frame is integrated into a smooth, full-width body shell. Unlike hood units, which have external walkways, a cab unit requires the crew to walk through the engine room to move from front to back. They were heavily favored for early passenger and freight service due to their aerodynamic styling.
