Cannon box

nounStandard termRailroad

A tubular housing that encloses an entire axle to keep the bearings aligned.

A rigid, cylindrical housing that surrounds a locomotive or car axle, holding the roller bearings at both ends in perfect alignment. By enclosing the axle completely, it prevents the bearings from twisting or binding under heavy loads and keeps dirt out of the lubrication.
