Cattle wagon

nounStandard termRailroad

A British and European term for a railway car designed to transport live animals.

A covered freight vehicle built with slatted sides to provide ventilation for livestock during transit. On North American railroads, crews universally call this equipment a stock car rather than a wagon. These vehicles required frequent stops for feed and water to keep the animals alive over long distances.

Heard on the job

The museum brought in an old British cattle wagon to display next to our wooden stock cars.
