Coal pusher

nounStandard termRailroad

A steam-era mechanism that moves coal forward in a locomotive tender.

A steam-operated mechanical ram located at the rear of a locomotive tender's coal bunker. When activated by the fireman, it shoved the coal supply forward toward the cab deck, eliminating the grueling manual labor of shoveling fuel from the back of a nearly empty tender.

Heard on the job
