NIST traceable
A common label phrase claiming a measurement links back to US national standards, often used loosely.
A phrase seen on certificates, product listings and sales sheets claiming that a measurement is traceable to the US national standards maintained at NIST. Real traceability belongs to a specific result and requires an unbroken documented chain with uncertainties at every link, and the institute itself does not approve or certify anyone's traceability claim. Metrologists treat the bare phrase as a prompt to ask for the certificate, the uncertainties and the accreditation scope behind it.
Box says NIST traceable but there's no uncertainty on the cert, so it doesn't meet our requirement.
A seasoned auditor hears 'NIST traceable' and asks one thing: show me the uncertainty at each link.
