NMI stands for national metrology institute, the organization that realizes and maintains a nation's measurement standards and disseminates them through calibrations, such as NIST in the United States, PTB in Germany and NPL in the United Kingdom. NMIs compare their standards with one another in key comparisons and publish their calibration and measurement capabilities in a shared international database. Accredited labs usually anchor their traceability at an NMI.
