Deadmelt

verbStandard termMetallurgy

To hold molten steel at a high temperature to allow deoxidation.

Holding a batch of molten steel in the furnace without adding new material, allowing time for trapped gases to escape and deoxidizing agents to fully react. This quiet period ensures the metal is completely deoxidized and stable before tapping. It prevents blowholes and porosity in the final casting or ingot.
