Cuprotitanium

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A master alloy of copper and titanium used as an additive in metal production.

Cuprotitanium is a specialized alloy created by reducing rutile ore in the presence of copper. Foundries use it as a deoxidizer and degassing agent for non-ferrous melts, particularly in brass and bronze production. Adding a small amount to the melt improves the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of the final casting without introducing iron.

Heard on the job

Add three pounds of cuprotitanium to the melt just before pouring to pull out the remaining oxygen.
