Debind

verbStandard termMetallurgy

To extract organic binding agents from a molded metal powder part before sintering.

Debinding is a critical step in metal injection molding and powder metallurgy where the polymer or wax binders used to shape the green part are removed. This is typically done through thermal heating, solvent extraction or catalytic processes. If the debinding cycle is too fast, expanding gases will crack or blister the fragile part before it reaches the sintering furnace.

Heard on the job

If you rush the thermal cycle and debind too quickly, those green parts will blister and fail quality control.

Insider tip

The part left after you debind is called a brown part, and it is highly porous and fragile until sintered.
