Ingate

nounStandard termMetallurgy

The final opening through which molten metal enters the main cavity of a mold.

An ingate is the specific channel connecting the runner system to the actual part cavity in a sand or die casting mold. Its size and placement control the velocity and flow pattern of the liquid metal entering the mold. If the ingate is too small, the metal freezes too fast; if it is too large, it is difficult to break off the finished casting.

Heard on the job

Choke the flow at the ingate so we don't blast sand off the far wall of the cavity.

Insider tip

Ingates are often tapered to increase metal velocity and ensure the runner stays full, preventing air entrapment.
