Match

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A contoured block or plate used to support a pattern and define the parting line of a mould.

A solid form made of plaster, wood, resin or hard sand that holds a foundry pattern in a specific orientation. It provides a pre-shaped parting surface for the drag half of the flask, saving the moulder from having to manually cut the parting line in loose sand. Once the drag is rammed and flipped, the match is removed, leaving the pattern perfectly embedded and ready for the cope.

Heard on the job

The parting line on this bracket is too complex to cut by hand, so we need to pour a plaster match.

Insider tip

A well-made match pays for itself in production speed, as the moulder can ram up the drag in seconds instead of spending ten minutes cutting the sand joint.
