A shank consists of a metal ring that holds a crucible, attached to long horizontal bars extending outward. It allows two or more foundry workers to manually lift, carry, and tilt heavy ladles of liquid metal while standing safely away from the radiant heat. A single-man shank has handles on one side and a counterweight or pivot on the other.
