Lance

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A slender iron rod used to suspend and stabilize a sand core inside a mold cavity.

A rigid metal rod inserted into a mold to hold a core precisely in place during pouring. It prevents the buoyant forces of the heavy molten metal from shifting or floating the core out of alignment. The lance is often designed to fuse partially with the poured metal or is knocked out during the shakeout process.

Heard on the job

Make sure the lance is seated deep in the print so the core doesn't shift when the iron hits it.
