Core print

nounStandard termMetallurgy

A projection on a casting pattern that creates a seat in the mold to hold a sand core securely.

A specific projection on a foundry pattern designed to create a resting place or seat in the sand mold. This seat securely holds the sand core in position during pouring so it does not shift, float, or break when the heavy molten metal flows around it.

Heard on the job

Make sure you paint the core print a different color on the pattern so the molders know it's not part of the final casting.

Insider tip

Core prints are traditionally painted black or yellow on wooden patterns to distinguish them from the main body of the casting.
